Listeners of my podcast, The Heart of Mindful Living, know that I’ve been in the middle of a four-part series on intuition. This week, I’m continuing that journey by opening the door a little wider, into a deeper conversation about mediumship.
What Is Mediumship?
Mediumship to me, is just another language of intuition. It’s a way the heart listens beyond the physical world. Some people experience it as a soft awareness of those who’ve crossed over, a recognition of their energy and essence. It isn’t about fear or spectacle; it’s about love, understanding, and remembering that connection doesn’t stop when the body does.
Love simply changes form. Everything that unfolds in mediumship, I believe, begins with God. It’s through that divine presence that love continues, that souls remain connected, and that healing finds its way into our hearts. Mediumship is simply one expression of that eternal love, I like to think that it’s God’s way of saying, “I am still here, and so are they.”
The Early Years
I learned from a young age that those we love don’t truly leave us, not fully. Even though they’ve stepped beyond the world we live in, they’re still present in countless ways. Maybe it’s their soul, their spirit, or simply the essence of who they were, or still are, whatever you choose to call it, it lingers. And when you have an extra sense for those subtle energies, you start to see the world through a different lens, one where love and energy continue, even when their form changes. Mediumship, at its core, is about listening with the heart. It’s about honoring those connections, bringing comfort to others, and remembering that the bonds we share are not broken by time or distance. Love, in its truest form, is eternal, it just keeps finding new ways to speak to us.
Popular Misconceptions
I think there’s often a big misconception about people who have this kind of sensitivity, whether they work with it professionally or simply experience it in their own quiet way. When many people hear the word medium, it can bring to mind images of crystal balls, tarot cards, or spooky movie scenes. And while that might be how some choose to express their connection, for me, I take a different approach. I don’t use nor rely on any tools or specific practices.
My approach is simple and heart-led: if the connection is there, it’s there. If it’s not, then it’s not, and that’s perfectly okay. When the connection is there, it feels effortless, like a gentle flow of awareness that moves through love, not ego. It’s not about trying to make something happen; it’s about allowing space for it to unfold naturally. The more I stay centered, open, and compassionate, the more naturally that connection flows.
A medium acts as a bridge between worlds, receiving subtle impressions and giving them a voice in a way that helps to bring comfort, healing, and understanding to the sitter. It’s a language of the soul, spoken through feeling, intuition, and compassion. You can think of it as a deeper extension of intuition itself. While intuitive insight often relates to your own life or the energy surrounding living people, mediumship reaches across that gentle divide to connect with the love, wisdom, and presence that continue beyond this physical plane.
It’s not some kind of magic trick or mysterious gift reserved for a few. It’s a natural sense, something I believe we all carry within us. When we learn to listen with the heart instead of just the mind, that inner sensitivity grows stronger, clearer, and more attuned to what’s true and eternal. Some souls come into this life already open, as though they were born with the volume of that inner radio turned up high, naturally tuned to the whispers of spirit. For others, this sensitivity unfolds slowly through patience, practice, and mindful awareness. In truth, it’s less about learning how to connect, and more about remembering that we already are connected, we always have been and always will be.
At its heart, it’s about serving, offering love, reassurance, and peace to those who seek it. It’s an act of compassion, a way of reminding us that love never ends, and that the bonds of the heart are far stronger than the boundaries of the physical world.
How Does It Work?
Mediumship happens through what many call the clairs, or “clear senses.” These mirror our normal senses, but they operate on an intuitive level. If you’re curious to learn more about the clairs, I shared a deeper look at them in one of my earlier blogs. The four listed below are the most familiar and widely experienced intuitive senses.
Clairvoyance (clear seeing): When information comes through as images or symbols in the mind’s eye, faces, colors, scenes, or memories.
Clairaudience (clear hearing): When words, names, or phrases seem to appear in the inner ear or thoughts.
Clairsentience (clear feeling): When emotions or physical sensations arise that belong to someone else, like sensing joy, calm, or even how someone passed.
Claircognizance (clear knowing): When truth simply drops in- a fact, a name, a feeling of certainty that seems to arrive from nowhere.
Each medium uses these senses differently, and sometimes they use several at once. Messages often appear as gentle impressions rather than dramatic scenes. It’s not about seeing spirits floating around; it’s about receiving impressions through the language of intuition. These include pictures in the mind’s eye, feelings, memories, and energy.
The Importance of Evidence
In mediumship, evidence is everything. It’s what helps both the medium and the sitter trust that what’s coming through is real, not imagined or assumed. Evidence grounds the experience, it turns something unseen into something felt, recognized, and deeply personal.
This evidence can appear in many forms: a loved one’s name, their physical appearance, the way they dressed, or the kind of work they did. Sometimes it’s their sense of humor, a favorite phrase, a song they cherished, or the memory of a beloved pet. Other times, it’s something wonderfully small- a private joke, a family tradition, or a moment only the sitter and their loved one would understand.
Those details matter. They’re the threads that weave trust into the reading, the moments that help the person receiving the message know , not just hope, that their loved one is truly present. It’s one thing to say, “Your grandfather loves you.” It’s another to say, “He’s showing me his fishing hat with the little gold pins on it,” and watch that recognition light up in someone’s eyes.
That’s the heart of evidential mediumship, where intuitive connection becomes tangible, where love takes shape through evidence, and where comfort becomes something you can truly feel and trust.
The Impact on People
When evidential details come through, something powerful happens. Grief can begin to soften. Doubt quiets, just a little. And for a moment, the heart recognizes what faith has been whispering all along, that love doesn’t end. It simply changes form. These moments of connection often bring a peace that words alone can’t provide. They help people sleep again, forgive again, breathe again. They remind us that our loved ones are not gone or lost, they’ve simply shifted into a different kind of presence, one that can still be felt with the heart. I like to think that this work helps bridge the space between us and God, in a way. It’s a gentle reminder that we’re never truly separate. God is love. God is connection. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, both through this work and through biblical teachings, it’s that God’s presence and love are eternal. We’re here to live in that love, to extend it to others as freely as it’s been given to us, and to walk without judgment, guided by compassion and grace.
At it’s best, mediumship isn’t mysterious or theatrical, it’s deeply human and profoundly healing. It’s love finding its way through the noise of grief to say, “I’m still here. I never left.”
A Natural Sensitivity
It’s important to understand that some people simply come into this world a little more open to subtle energy. For them, sensing Spirit can feel as natural as noticing someone’s mood the moment they walk into a room. It’s just part of how they’re wired from birth or from their younger years. That doesn’t mean however that everyone else is excluded from that kind of connection. We all share the same divine current, it runs through every one of us. For most people, this sensitivity unfolds over time. It grows as we learn to quiet the noise of the mind, listen more deeply with the heart, and trust the quiet ways Spirit speaks. The more we soften, the more clearly we hear.
How You Can Develop Your Intuitive Abilities
If you feel drawn to develop your intuition or if you’re looking to explore gentle forms of mediumship, here are a few simple, grounded ways to begin:
Create quiet space.
Set aside a few minutes each day to be still, no distractions, no expectations. Let your thoughts settle, and notice the subtle sensations that remain.Practice mindful awareness.
Pay attention to what you feel around people and places. Notice the energy, feel how your body and emotions respond. Over time, you’ll start to recognize what intuition feels like for you.Journal your impressions.
When something intuitive comes through like a sudden thought, a dream, or a strong feeling, write it down. Looking back on your past experiences will help you see patterns and learn to trust what’s true.Work from love, not fear.
Always approach spiritual development with a heart centered on compassion and faith. Ask God for guidance and protection in every practice.Find community and training.
Join a reputable development circle or mentorship group where you can practice safely, share experiences, and learn ethical ways to use your abilities.Stay grounded.
Remember: spiritual sensitivity works best when you’re balanced in daily life. Eating well, resting, laughing, and living fully. The more grounded you are, the clearer your intuitive perception becomes.
It’s important to note these aren’t quick tricks, they’re lifelong habits of listening.
Over time, they help you develop trust in your own connection with Spirit and with God’s quiet guidance.
Closing Thoughts
Mediumship is simply one expression of divine communication, a reminder that love and consciousness are eternal, and that God’s presence continues to move through every soul, both here and beyond. For some, this path feels like a calling. For others, it’s an awakening, a realization that life is far deeper, kinder, and more connected than we’ve been taught to believe.
If there’s one message I hope you take away, it’s that your intuition is sacred. Whether it speaks through prayer, through dreams, or in the quiet pull of your heart, it’s one of the ways God reaches out to guide and comfort you.
In my work, I help women learn to hear and trust that inner guidance, to recognize their own wisdom, and to find peace in the knowing that they are never alone in what they feel. When we learn to listen with love and openness, that guidance becomes a steady voice within us, leading us toward peace, purpose, and truth.
As you continue to grow and listen, may your sensitivity be a gift, something that brings healing to your own heart, and hope to the hearts you touch along the way.
